From 2:00 p.m.: 1:1 CONCERTS at various locations
7:00 p.m.: LIVE CONCERT with sound artist Jonas Urbat
Before Chemnitz invites people to experience the region from a new perspective as the 2025 European Capital of Culture under the motto “C the Unseen,” the concert project UN:HEARD SOUNDS OF INDUSTRY wants to make the “unheard” tangible: On Friday, August 16, 2024, the theme of industrial culture will take center stage musically at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry. The traces of Chemnitz’s former industrial hub—where iron casting, mechanical engineering, and the textile industry once shaped people’s lives—are still tangible today and will be made newly audible here!
From 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., the 1:1 CONCERTS will take place for the first time in Chemnitz—one of the simplest yet most intense concert formats. In a 1:1 CONCERT, a musician and a listener meet for 10 minutes of music. Which instrument is played and who performs remains a surprise until the last moment. A silent eye contact sets the impulse for a highly personal concert, where the music is decided in the moment of the “encounter.” Musicians from the Robert Schumann Philharmonic and the Chemnitz independent scene perform, spanning various genres from classical, jazz, world music, electronic, and singer/songwriter to rock. The musicians are encouraged to engage with the history and acoustic culture of the respective space and bring it to life musically. This format allows for a very personal concert on equal footing and a highly intense resonance experience for both sides.
After the award-winning 1:1 CONCERTS have been presented worldwide in over 60 cities with 20,000 concerts in recent years, the Chemnitz premiere can be celebrated in a special location of industrial culture: The concerts take place in unusual spaces, both in front of and behind the scenes of the museum—workshops, storage areas, exhibition rooms, or the museum’s educational laboratory.
In the evening at 7:00 p.m., artist Jonas Urbat (SoundWERK-Productions) will perform a sound performance with the museum’s exhibition objects. Using the live sounds of ringing machines and objects, he composes and improvises music pieces never heard before. From telephone systems to circular knitting machines, a quartet of human, machine, tuba, and electronics creates an emotional journey through the character and history of the objects. In preparation, various sounds were collaboratively explored, tested, recorded, and curated together with museum visitors and Chemnitz residents, and will become an integral part of the evening’s performance.
Starting August 1, the 1:1 CONCERTS can be booked individually in 15-minute slots via the provided link, while the evening performance is open to all. Admission is free, donations are welcome—because in 2025 the project is planned to expand into a three-day music festival of industrial culture with additional partners and venues in Chemnitz. The 2024 project realization is made possible through funding from Musikfond e. V., using funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and the Bürgerplattform Chemnitz-Mitte with city tax funds, as well as through the dedicated support of all cooperation partners and volunteers.
An event by 1:1 CONCERTS e. V. in cooperation with Chemnitz Museum of Industry, Buntmacher:innen e. V., and the Robert Schumann Philharmonic. Additional partners include the Chemnitz Music School, Garagen-Campus, Bandbüro Chemnitz, and Chemnitz Jazz Club e. V.
