There's a lot going on at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry

Activities and events for all ages from 29 May to 2 June 2024

From May 29 to June 2, the Chemnitz Museum of Industry invites visitors to a week-long marathon of events. The program includes film screenings as part of the 1st Industriemuseum OPEN AIR and the community project by Buntmacher*innen e. V., the 2nd National Hydrogen Grand Prix organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU, a guided tour of the museum depot, and a lecture on the Polish partner city of Łódź.

The 1st Industriemuseum OPEN AIR kicks off on May 29 at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn behind the museum parking lot with an evening themed “A Day at the Sea.” The event is organized by partners Kino Metropol, Mario Obst Event & Messe, and the Chemnitz Museum of Industry, with the kind support of eins energie in sachsen.

The International OCEAN FILM TOUR will open the event, combining outstanding documentary content with a love of the sea and a commitment to its protection. On Friday, May 31, at 6:00 p.m., the event partners invite attendees to the premiere of the film 2unbreakable, a documentary following two breakdancers on their journey to the Olympics. After a discussion with the director, Maike Conway, DJ team Bataclan will spin classic and contemporary HipHop. The film program continues on June 1 at 6:00 p.m. with the European Outdoor Film Tour, presenting spectacular outdoor and travel adventures across Europe. The program concludes on June 2 with two films accompanying the museum’s historic children’s vehicles from collector Eckart Holler and the Pohl-Ströher depot in Gelenau. Starting at 10:00 a.m., Elster Louis and Igel Luca delight children aged four and up with their second cinematic adventure, Louis & Luca: The Great Cheese Race. At 3:00 p.m., Walt Disney’s The Love Bug tells the story of a hapless race car driver who discovers Herbie, a VW Beetle with a mind of its own.

Tickets are available in advance via Kino Metropol or at the box office. In addition to drinks and typical cinema snacks, catering from NOMAD can be pre-ordered: www.industriemuseum-openair.de.

As part of the Buntmacher*innen e. V. community project, a matinée will be held on June 1 at 10:00 a.m. in the museum’s outdoor area. U.S. director Ron Frank will present his documentary The Eternal Road for the first time in Chemnitz. The film tells the story of the creation, 1937 world premiere in New York, and 1999 German premiere in Chemnitz of Kurt Weill’s opera The Eternal Road, intertwining these events with Frank’s own family history. A discussion with Ron Frank will conclude the event. Admission is free.

In case of bad weather, film screenings will take place inside the museum.

On May 30, the Chemnitz Museum of Industry invites visitors at 2:00 p.m. to a guided tour of the museum depot and at 6:00 p.m. to the lecture Łódź – the Polish Manchester and Its Chemnitz Influences. The lecture, part of the Chemnitz European Weeks and in preparation for the European special exhibition Tales of Transformation, will be delivered by Edeltraud Höfer. Admission is free.

For International Children’s Day on June 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Germany’s top young pilots will compete with their radio-controlled and hydrogen-powered 1:10 scale racers in the 2nd National Hydrogen Grand Prix in the museum’s main exhibition hall. The winning team among the eleven participating teams from Chemnitz, Erzgebirgskreis, Mittelsachsen, and Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge will travel to the world finals in Anaheim, California, in mid-September. The Grand Prix is organized by the Orga-Team of Referenzfabrik.H2 at the Fraunhofer IWU and supported by partners including eins energie in sachsen, Werkzeugbau Winkelmühle GmbH, Albert Schmutzler Schnitt- und Stanzwerkzeuge, and Bernd Flach Präzisionstechnik GmbH & Co.
