As every year: During the Advent season, the air is filled with the scent of fir, oranges, incense cones, and mulled wine. There’s also the aroma of freshly baked Christmas cookies and gingerbread - perhaps once served on this very plate.
This flat cookie plate in coupe form, featuring a cobalt blue Christmas design, was produced in 1940 by the Rosenthal Porcelain Factory on behalf of the Wanderer-Werke. It was given to the company’s employees as a Christmas gift - a symbol of gratitude and solidarity.
In the center, we see a light-bearing angel in the Ore Mountains tradition, with large wings and Christmas trees in both hands. The angel was meant to bring a bit of light and warmth into the dark season. Encircling the motif among stars are the words “Merry Christmas!” and “WANDERER WERKE.” The coupe plate is not pure white but covered with a slightly ivory-colored glaze. The date can be easily verified on the back: the green base mark shows the Rosenthal script with two dots to the left and right of the crown, indicating the year 1940.
Unfortunately, the original box has not been preserved. Unlike many other Christmas plates, this one was not intended for wall display. And thanks to its underglaze decoration, the plate can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher.
