Library

The scientific specialist library of the Chemnitz Museum of Industry offers literature, both in print and digital formats, on Saxon economic and industrial history and is accessible to public institutions, associations, companies, as well as private individuals.

The library provides literature and other media for museum staff to:

  • conduct scholarly research on the museum’s holdings,
  • prepare new special exhibitions,
  • support scientific research, and
  • assist with conservation and restoration work.

It is also connected to national and international interlibrary loan networks.

Collection size

The library’s total holdings comprise approximately 30,000 media units, including books, journals, company brochures, electronic resources, and an extensive collection of articles related to the aforementioned collection focuses. Numerous valuable historical holdings enrich the library’s offerings, including economic history sources, specialist literature on the history of technology, and regional publications.

Through the acquisition of new publications and antiquarian literature, exchanges of publications with other museums and institutions, donations, and journal subscriptions, the collection grows by about 500 media units annually.

Research

Use

Due to its valuable historical holdings and the large proportion of grey literature, the scientific specialist library of the Chemnitz Museum of Industry functions as a reference library. Literature can be consulted at the library’s user workstations but cannot be borrowed. If the condition of the respective books allows, copies can be made by the library staff. Use of the library is by prior arrangement.
