The Poetry of Functionality

Exhibition of Award-Winning and Selected Works from the 2nd International Marianne Brandt Competition

For the second time, young creatives from all over Europe were invited to send their best works to Chemnitz. The competition was held in honor of Marianne Brandt, one of the city’s most distinguished daughters.

She became especially renowned for her metal designs at the Bauhaus Dessau.

The competition aimed to support emerging talent. Prizes were awarded in the categories of product design and photography, the main fields of Marianne Brandt’s work. The third category changes with each edition; while it was collage the first time, this year the focus was on innovative clothing.

In keeping with Bauhaus philosophy, the competition is held under the motto “The Poetry of Functionality.” The emphasis is on practical, purposeful works that avoid fleeting effects, yet are neither cold nor purely utilitarian.

Following this guideline, the international jury selected the winners in the three categories at the end of June. These, along with other selected works, will be on display at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry in October.
