The Poetry of Functionality

Exhibition of Award-Winning and Selected Works from the 3rd International Marianne Brandt Competition

Out of 273 submissions, including 63 from abroad, the jury of the 3rd International Marianne Brandt Competition selected the winners and honorable mentions in the three categories: product design, photography, and regional concepts.

In October 2006, the Chemnitz-based competition honoring the Bauhaus legend Marianne Brandt, who hailed from the city, was announced by the art association VILLA ARTE e.V.
In June 2007, the six jury members, chaired by the young Berlin photographer Wiebke Loeper, met at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry to assess the quality of the entries. The competition, open to emerging talents from across Europe, was themed “The Poetry of Functionality”, which served as the benchmark for evaluating the works. The jurors from three countries often had differing opinions, leading to lively discussion and debate until a consensus was reached.

On September 30, the winners were revealed at the ceremonial closing event at the Chemnitz Opera House. In addition to the main prizes, each worth €5,000, the Saxon State Ministry for Science and the Arts awarded a €5,000 sponsorship prize, presented by State Minister Dr. Eva-Maria Stange.
