Tales of Transformation
Chemnitz – Gabrovo – Łódź – Manchester – Mulhouse – Tampere
Rapid growth and lavish wealth paired with precarious living conditions. Later, a radical collapse and the necessary reinvention.
Experience the exciting development of the city of Chemnitz from industrialization to the current transformation processes. Chemnitz initiated industrialization in Saxony and became known as the “Saxon Manchester.” However, these “Manchesters” exist all across Europe, showing that Chemnitz is not the only city facing challenges: Mulhouse in France, Tampere in Finland, Gabrovo in Bulgaria, Łódź in Poland, and, of course, the original Manchester in Northern England. How do these cities handle their industrial heritage? What strategies do they have for the future, and what can we learn from each other?
Dive into the development processes of these cities from the 19th century until today, experiencing history, the present, and future visions through digital enhancements. Discover stories of people who breathe new life into 19th-century industrial buildings. Here, foundries become universities, spinning mills turn into luxury lofts, and factory halls transform into studio spaces.
During the exhibition period, an extensive accompanying program will be offered - both at the Chemnitz Museum of Industry and beyond. In addition to guided tours, project days, tours, and workshops, there will also be readings, film screenings, concerts, lectures, and much more.
A project within the framework of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. This initiative is co-financed by public funds based on the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament and by federal funds from the Commissioner of the Federal Government for Culture and the Media.
