Saxon Chamber of Engineers Celebrates 20th Anniversary – History of the Chamber Deeply Rooted in Chemnitz
A spirit of new beginnings, somewhat chaotic conditions, attempts at self-discovery – many people remember all too well the period shortly after German reunification in 1990. It was in this very environment that Saxon engineers laid the foundation for establishing their own professional chamber in the Free State. The history of the Saxon Chamber of Engineers is closely tied to the city of Chemnitz. While there were only isolated activities and initiatives at the outset, these gradually became more structured from 1991 onward and culminated in the summer of 1992 with the formation of the Arbeitskreis Ingenieurkammer Sachsen e.V.. Over 1,500 engineers attended the founding event at the Chemnitz Stadthalle.
Just one year later – in September 1993 – the association, thanks to the dedication of its members, achieved its goal: the passage of the Engineer Chamber Act by the Saxon State Parliament. This marked the birth of the Saxon Chamber of Engineers as an independent public-law corporation and, thus, the only legally recognized professional representative body for all engineers in the Free State. To this day, Chemnitz is legally the seat of the Saxon Chamber of Engineers. Although the main office is now in Dresden, the Chamber continues to maintain its own office in the “City of Modernity.”
