Urban Redevelopment East – Urban Redevelopment Chemnitz

The Urban Redevelopment East program, which began in 2001, engaged the heritage protection authorities for over eight years to minimize negative impacts. Although the program primarily aimed at the demolition of “surplus” apartments in prefabricated housing estates, it also affected listed residential buildings. The renovation and repurposing of industrial monuments, however, were largely unaffected. Large, abandoned industrial heritage sites made progress in their development, such as the Schönherr weaving mill, the Bernhard spinning mill in Harthau, and the Wirkbau complex. These sites will be examined in more detail.
