Manchester as „Coketown“ and „Milton“
Irony and Reality in the English Industrial Novel by Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell

Manchester, the bustling industrial metropolis of 19th-century England, serves in the works of Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell as a setting for exploring social injustices. In Hard Times (1854), Dickens presents the city as “Coketown,” providing the backdrop for his ironic social critique. Gaskell refers to her version of the city as “Milton” in North and South (1855), offering realistic insights into the social tensions between the working class and industrialists. In addition to discussing these two perspectives, the lecture also examines the socio-political transformations triggered by these novels.
