Chemnitz Repurposing Projects of the Last Ten Years

Lecture by Thomas Morgenstern

Between 1991 and 2020, more than 120 listed industrial buildings in the city of Chemnitz were successfully renovated and repurposed, including some on major sites such as the Schönherr weaving mill. In recent years, following Chemnitz’s successful bid to become the European Capital of Culture 2025, several long-dormant industrial monuments—such as the Kappel tram depot, the Schmidt-Rottluff complex, and the Hartmann factory hall—have been successfully restored and are now used for European Capital of Culture activities.

This event is part of a lecture series with Thomas Morgenstern, Dipl.-Ing. Architect and head of the Heritage Protection Authority of the city of Chemnitz from 1989 to 2019.
